Safeguarding the future: the Murcian Chicken Germplasm Bank

At Pujante, the preservation of our genetic and cultural heritage is essential, especially when it comes to the Murciana Chicken, a very valuable native breed.

A key element in this mission is, without a doubt, the Germplasm BankLocated in Tomás Ferro Estate of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT)This bank focuses on the preservation of genetic material, specifically semen in liquid nitrogen, ensuring the perpetuity of this unique breed.

Drawing inspiration from the Biodiversity Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, this bank is part of a global effort to maintain the diversity of species and genetic resources. Its objective is to provide a "Backup" genetics that can withstand challenges such as climate change, disease or adverse genetic selection.

But this project would not be possible without the collaboration between Pujante, the UPCT y AGAMUR. Together, we disseminate this invaluable resource.

The teacher Eva Armero and the veterinary Silvia Rey, whose experience and dedication are essential, lead a European project that finances research in this field, ensuring that the bank conserves, but also innovates in the way it manages all the genetic material.

Veterinarian Silvia Rey Antón points out that "the main advantage is the long-term conservation of genetic material, which acts as a preventive measure against extinction and allows genetic exchange between farms without health risks. This is crucial to maintain genetic diversity and avoid inbreeding, guaranteeing the health and viability of the breed in the long term."

And precisely, a few months ago, Silvia Rey received an award for this work in the 'UPCT WIA2024 Agri-Food Research Workshop' in its 13th edition, after the presentation of his work derived from his Doctoral Thesis of the TAIDA Program, 'Development of a germplasm bank for the native breed Gallina Murciana', fundamental in the research, development and innovation of this Murcian Chicken Germplasm Bank.

Innovation in genetic conservation

This research, led by Silvia Rey, focuses on optimizing sperm freezing protocols for the Murcian hen. This is a critical step, given that artificial insemination in hens faces unique challenges, especially with frozen semen that tends to lose quality and fertility. The goal is to develop a method that is effective specifically for this breed, considering the variations between different indigenous breeds.

Nutrition and reproduction

In addition to genetic conservation, at Pujante we understand that nutrition plays a crucial role in the well-being and reproductive capacity of our birds.

The inclusion of omega fatty acids in the diets of roosters has shown a significant improvement in their reproductive parameters, an essential factor for the effectiveness of artificial insemination with frozen semen.

Our dedication to improving the Gallina Murciana leads us to constantly collaborate with entities such as AGAMUR and the UPCT in projects whose main objective is to improve this breed. And it is through these efforts that Pujante positions itself as a defender of tradition, and an innovator in the conservation of biodiversity and sustainability.

In short, this Murcian Chicken Germplasm Bank It is more than a conservation facility; it is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, innovation and environmental responsibility.

By protecting this breed we preserve a key component of our heritage, and also ensure that future generations can enjoy and benefit from this rich biological diversity.

This integrated approach ensures that the legacy of our Gallina Murciana continues to thrive, supporting both biodiversity and innovation in regional agriculture and livestock.
